Celtic Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Celtic Yachts builds the Admiral sailing catamarans in Cape Town, South Africa. The Admiral 38 was drawn by the designer Angelo Lavranos, and the yard developed the Admiral 40 from it, with more interior volume, more headroom and flat, easy decks to move around on. The boats follow the classic cruising catamaran layout, with a large saloon on the bridgedeck between the hulls and generous space fore and aft. Many Admirals reach their owners not on a ship but under their own sail, on a delivery from South Africa to the Caribbean that crosses thousands of miles of open Atlantic.
Our model records list three designs, all sailing catamarans. The Admiral 50 is the largest at 15.25 metres and runs from 1997 to 2018. The Celtic Yachts Admiral 38 at 11.6 metres is the smallest and appears from 1998 to 2022. The Celtic Yachts Admiral 40 at 12.2 metres starts in 2010 and is the only line that reaches into recent build years. The records therefore span more than two decades, and all three are cruising catamarans between just under twelve and just over fifteen metres.
A catamaran that has sailed up from Cape Town arrives with real sea miles, and those miles show in specific places. Check the bridgedeck underside for slamming damage, the rudder bearings and saildrive seals on both hulls, and the forward crossbeam and its attachment. Two engines mean twice the service history to read. Many Admirals have been used in charter, so the wear on galley, heads and cabin joinery tells how hard a boat has worked. A recent rig inspection and a survey out of the water are worth the trouble before buying.
