Copland; cover, cost and conditions
Copland Boats worked from Ventnor on the south coast of the Isle of Wight. John Macintosh founded the yard in 1967, and it built under its own name until 1985, when it merged with Souters Shipyard and moved to Cowes. Copland is remembered for small keelboats drawn by Uffa Fox, who designed both the Foxcub and the Foxhound. The Foxcub 18 is a masthead sloop with a fin keel and a transom-hung rudder, light enough to trail and launch off a beach. The Foxhound has a name for good windward ability and pace in light airs. In the late 1970s the Fox Terrier joined the range, a design by Tony Dixon. The Fox names running through the whole range make a Copland easy to place.
Our model records list five designs, all filed as sailing boats. Three of them measure 5.5 metres: the Foxcub from 1968, the Foxcub 18 from 1969 and an entry spelt Foxub 18 from 1974 to 1981, which by its name belongs to the same family. The Foxhound is the largest at 7.27 metres and runs from 1972 to 1982. The Fox Terrier measures 6.73 metres and closes the range with build years 1981 to 1987. None of the lines reaches the recent build years, so every Copland is close to forty years old or more. The Foxcub 18 has the longest run, from 1969 to 1984.
Small keelboats of this age are simple, and most problems are easy to see. Check the keel joint and the keel bolts first, since a fin keel on a light hull works hard every time the boat is trailed or dried out. Rudder fittings on a transom-hung rudder wear and loosen over the years. Look at the deck around the mast step and the chainplates for soft spots or cracks in the gelcoat. Sails on these boats are often original or close to it, and a new suit changes how they sail. The road trailer deserves the same attention as the boat, from tyres and bearings to the rollers that carry the hull.
