Corby Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Corby Yachts is the work of John Corby, a yacht designer based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Unusually for his generation, he has built boats with his own hands as well as drawing them. Before yacht design he served as an officer in the Royal Marines. Between 1986 and 1988 he taught himself computer-aided design and worked for the designer Julian Everitt. He went out on his own in 1988, after a commission to design and build a 27 foot light-displacement yacht for the CHS rule. Boats followed from his own business in Cowes and from yards in Poland, Turkey, Latvia and Wales, in cedar strip, glassfibre, Kevlar or carbon. The Corby 26, 29 and 33 came from a production range that a Gdansk yard built to his drawings.

Our model records list a single design for Corby Yachts, the Corby 29 sailing yacht. It is recorded for build years 2002 to 2009 and measures 8.8 metres. The Corby 26 and 33, which the source also mentions, are not in our records, and the entry does not run into recent build years. Every Corby 29 is therefore a used boat today. Since the production boats were built in Poland to Corby's lines, it is worth reading the paperwork closely to see where and when a particular hull was laid up.

A Corby 29 is a racing boat first, and buyers should look at her the way a crew boss would. Check the keel bolts and the area around the keel root for signs of hard groundings, and look at the rudder bearings for play. Racing sails wear out long before the hull does, so an honest inventory with the age of each sail matters. Deck gear, winches and clutches take heavy loads every race day. A boat that has spent seasons on the Solent or the Irish Sea circuit may have a long racing history, which is worth asking about.

Series by Corby Yachts, build years and cover

Corby 29

Corby 29 is a sailing yacht from Corby Yachts, built from 2002 to 2009.

What this means for the cover

For the Corby 29 by Corby Yachts series the market value and the replacement cost often differ

widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Corby 29 by Corby Yachts series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
