Cornish Crabbers Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
Cornish Crabbers comes from Rock on the north coast of Cornwall. Roger Dongray, Peter Keeling and Ken Robertson set the company up in 1974. Dongray, an architect by profession, had drawn a gaff cutter of some 22 feet that became the Crabber 24, built in wood at first and soon in glassfibre. The Shrimper 19 followed in 1979, a small gaffer meant to live on a trailer. The boats are easy to spot: gaff rig with tan sails, bowsprit, wooden trim and tiller over a modern composite hull. The company went into liquidation in 2024, and a new team bought the brand together with the moulds.
Our model records list 37 designs: 17 open sailing boats, 14 sailing yachts and six motorboats. The oldest entries, the Crabber 24 and the original Crabber, start in 1973, and 16 lines reach into the most recent build years. The open boats include the Shrimper 17, 19 and 21, the Adventure 17 and 19, the Cormorant and the Limpet 10, at three metres the smallest boat of the brand. The yachts include the Crabber 24 MKV and 26, the Mystery 30 and 35 and the Pilot Cutter 30 at 11.9 metres. The Clam motorboats run from 17 to 21 feet. Fourteen designs stay under six metres, eleven measure eight metres or more.
A gaffer asks for a different kind of care. Gaff, boom and bowsprit want a look at their jaws and fittings every spring, and the lacing of the sails wears where it rubs. The shallow draft is part of the charm: a Shrimper can take the ground on a falling tide in a creek where deeper keels never go. Many owners trail their boats from one cruising area to the next, so a sound road trailer matters as much as the boat. Older hulls from the seventies are often well kept and still sailed hard.
