Coronado Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Coronado Yachts began in Southern California in 1961, almost by accident. Frank W. Butler, who had been running a machine shop, only wanted a boat built for himself. When the builder could not repay a debt to him, Butler took over the tooling instead and carried on building. Production started in Costa Mesa, and the larger boats were later built at a plant in Virginia. Towards the end of the sixties Butler sold the company to the Whittaker Corporation, which kept the name going until 1974, and he went on to found Catalina Yachts. Coronado made its mark with one idea in particular: the Coronado 25 is credited as the first yacht with a one-piece glassfibre interior moulding, which stiffens the hull and simplifies building.
Our model records list three sailing yachts from the brand. The Coronado 25 at 7.62 metres has the longest run, with build years from 1962 to 1979. The smaller Coronado 23 measures 7.01 metres and is listed for 1969 to 1977. At the top sits the Coronado 41 at 12.2 metres, built from 1971 to 1979; it was developed as a stretched version of the Coronado 35 and has a centre cockpit. None of the three reaches into recent build years, so every Coronado on the water today is a second-hand boat with decades behind it. The Coronado 25 was also built by Russell Marine in Britain, which is why examples turn up in European harbours too.
A boat of this age is mostly about what previous owners have done. On a Coronado 25 or 23 it pays to check the chainplates, the mast step and the deck around the fittings, where water can find its way into the core after fifty years. The one-piece interior moulding makes the hull stiff, but it also hides parts of the inner hull, so a surveyor needs access through lockers and hatches. The Coronado 41 with its centre cockpit was drawn for cruising, and many have been refitted for longer passages; original wiring and tankage are worth a close look. Imported boats from the United States should come with clear paperwork.
