Worth knowing

Cox Marine Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions

Cox Marine Ltd. was registered in Stowmarket, Suffolk, incorporated on 16 January 1961 and dissolved on 19 February 2002. Through the seventies and eighties it turned out a fairly eclectic range of boats, and it is chiefly remembered for small, tubby motor-sailers with long keels. The Cox 27 shows the type well: 8.17 metres long, 3 metres in beam and drawing only 0.92 metres. Below the raised deck saloon there are five berths, two in the forecabin, two in the saloon and a quarter berth. The small rig gives modest sailing, while a 33 or 44 hp diesel pushes her along at seven knots. Reviews describe the boats as generally well built. Several of the smaller Cox 22, with a stepped glassfibre hull and fixed cabin, are still registered on the Norfolk Broads.

Our model records list four Cox Marine designs built between 1973 and 1987. Three are filed as sailing boats: the Cox 21 at 6.5 metres from 1973 to 1983, the Cox 22 MK-II S MS at 6.81 metres from 1973 to 1980 and the Cox 22 MS at 6.8 metres from 1974 to 1987. The letters MS in both Cox 22 names already point to the motor-sailer idea. The Cox 27 at 8.23 metres is recorded as a motor-sailer, built from 1979 to 1985. None of them reaches into recent build years, and production in our data ends in 1987. The lengths sit close together, from 6.5 to 8.2 metres. A Cox bought today is close to forty years old or more, and usually has had several owners.

A long-keeled motor-sailer of this age lives or dies by its engine and its keel joint. Ask for the diesel's history, check the engine beds and the stern tube, and look for weeping around the keel and the rudder heel. The small rig is often neglected on boats that mostly motor, so inspect standing rigging, chainplates and the mast step before trusting the sails. Raised saloons collect leaks around their windows, and soft spots in the deck are worth tapping for. On the plus side, the shallow draft and steady motion make these boats easy companions on rivers, estuaries and sheltered coasts, and the Broads boats show how long a well kept hull can last.
