Crowther; cover, cost and conditions

Behind this name stands an Australian designer: Lock Crowther, who built his first trimaran at seventeen and made a career of it. He became known in 1966, when one of his trimarans won the race from Sydney to Hobart. He drew sailing and power multihulls from leisure craft to fast ferries and worked early with sandwich construction in glassfibre and foam. After his death his son carried the office on, and in 2005 it was absorbed into a larger design practice. You recognise his boats by the very slender hulls, the high bridgedeck and the finely drawn bow.

Our model records list 51 Crowther designs: 44 sailing catamarans, six power catamarans and one sailing trimaran. Recorded build years run from 1977 to 2006. Fifty one series are recorded: the Kreuzer models 85/3, 95/2, 143, 150/2, 214, 220, 226, 228, 242/2, 274/2, 286 and 294; the Charter Kreuzer 108, 126, 213, 220 and 222; the cruising and racing designs; and the high speed catamarans 191 and 217 and the Mega-Kat 170. From the early years comes the Buccaneer 28 trimaran. Lengths run from 8.5 to 45.2 metres, half the designs between 11.3 and 17 metres.

A multihull is not a larger monohull. Two hulls carry a bridgedeck between them and there is no ballast keel to right the boat, so the stresses sit in the cross structure rather than low down in a fin. Many of these boats were also built from plans, by yards and by owners alike, which means their history is a build file rather than a yard serial number.
