Cutwater Boats; cover, cost and conditions

Cutwater Boats is one of the brands of Fluid Motion, a boatbuilder based in Monroe, Washington State. Its roots go back to the Ranger Fiberglass Boat Company, set up in Kent, Washington, in 1958. John, Jennifer and David Livingston took the business over in 1998 and turned it into Ranger Tugs, and Cutwater followed as a second brand in 2011. The yard builds cabin cruisers between 24 and 32 feet that pair sporty handling with somewhere to sleep, spread across several sites in Washington State. Fluid Motion now belongs to the Correct Craft group, while the base in Monroe has stayed. Every model name follows the same logic: a C, a number and a short code for the layout.

Our model records hold ten designs, all classed as motorboats and all starting with build year 2019. None has ended, so every one of the ten entries runs into the most recent build years. The C-24 is the widest family, offered in four versions: C, CW, DC and SC. The C-30 appears as CB and S, the C-32 as C and CB, and the C-248 C and C-288 C complete the list. Lengths in our records run from 9.4 metres for the C-248 C to 12.14 metres for both C-32 versions. Three designs stay below ten metres, four sit between ten and eleven, and three measure more than eleven metres.

These are boats people sleep and cook on, so a used Cutwater deserves a look inside as well as underneath. Check the cabin for damp in upholstery and headlining, run every electronic system, and look at the windows and hatches for weeping seals. Because all the designs come from recent years, most boats on the market are young, and service records from the first owner are often complete. Ask for them. If a road trailer comes with the boat, inspect the rollers, brakes and lights as carefully as the hull, since many owners tow between cruising areas. A sea trial at cruising speed shows more about the engine than any listing.

On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.

Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
