Damarin; cover, cost and conditions
Damarin builds its boats in Gouda, right on the bank of the Hollandse IJssel. Adrie van Dam founded the yard in 1995, but boatbuilding in the family goes back further: his grandfather Adrianes van Dam was a fisherman before he turned to building seaworthy barges. Damarin itself concentrates on small motorboats and tenders, developed and built entirely in the Netherlands. Among the newer designs is the 732 Xtender, which sits in the range between the 640 MPV and the 840 Xtender and has a hull drawn together with Studio Delta. The 640 is easy to spot by its compact cabin with stainless steel portlights set behind an open cockpit.
Our model records hold two Damarin entries, and both share almost the same name. The Grand Coast 640 is listed as a motorsailer, abbreviated MS, with build years from 1999 to 2006. The Grand Coast 640 MPV followed as a pure motorboat, built from 2008 to 2014. Both measure 6.4 metres, so the length stayed the same while the concept changed. Neither entry reaches the most recent build years in our records, even though the yard still offers the 640 in a newer form. At around 1,200 kilograms for the cabin version, it remains one of the cabin boats an ordinary car can still tow.
A small cabin boat like this lives between the water and the road. On the trailer, rollers and the winch strap should be checked regularly, and the hull wants a look where it sits on the bunks. On the motorsailer version, ask how often the mast has been stepped and lowered and look at the tabernacle and the standing rigging. On the MPV, engine hours and the transom around the motor mount deserve attention. The cabin is small, so a damp interior shows quickly: smell, cushions and the area under the berths tell you how the boat has been kept. A cockpit tent extends the space for overnight trips.
