Danboat; cover, cost and conditions
Danboat was a Danish builder of glassfibre sailing boats, part of the early wave of series production when Scandinavian cruising sailors moved from wood to GRP in the 1960s. Several models, among them the Danboat 23, 28 and 29, were drawn by K. Tholstrup-Hansen. They are sturdy cruisers for Scandinavian waters: the 28 with a long keel, the 23 a coastal cruiser with a fin keel and masthead rig. The number is roughly the length in feet; the Vikingkryssaren, Swedish for Viking cruiser, breaks the pattern.
Our model records list seven Danboat designs, four sailing boats and three sailing yachts. The smaller group takes in the 5.65 metre Danboat 18, the 23, the 24 and the 7.41 metre Vikingkryssaren. The yachts are the 8.55 metre Danboat 28, the 29 and the 10.06 metre Danboat 33, the longest model. Build years start in 1964 with the 28 and 33 and run to 1989 with the Vikingkryssaren; the 24 and 29 are recorded from 1967 to 1986.
A Danboat today is a classic of at least 35 years, often with new sails, rigging or engine. Chainplates, keel bolts and deck fittings deserve a close look on boats of this age. The Danboat 18 can still be towed; the larger models sit on a club mooring and come ashore for winter.
