Dean Catamarans; cover, cost and conditions

Dean Catamarans is a South African builder of sailing and power catamarans. Peter Dean Sr. founded the company in the late 1970s, and his son Peter Dean Jr. later ran it day to day. A Dean is known for its asymmetric hulls, with the flatter side turned inboard to reduce the wave that builds up between the two hulls. Alongside the Dean sailing cats, the yard built the Jag power catamarans. Many boats went to owners in France. On the early sailing models the number in the name is close to the length in feet, as with the Dean 34 and Dean 440.

Our model records hold eight Dean catamarans, six sailing and two power. The line opens in 1986 with the 11 metre Dean 34 (to 1992), followed by the 11.2 metre Dean 365 (1987 to 1994) and the 12 metre Dean 400 (1993 to 2003). The 13.41 metre Dean 440 runs longest, from 1995 to 2013, and the 13.3 metre Dean 441 from 2004 to 2013. The 15.39 metre Dean 5000 is the largest sailing model, listed from 2009 to 2016. The power cats are the 16.1 metre Jag 530 (2002 to 2008) and the 16.5 metre Jag 550 (2005 to 2013), the longest of all.

Many Dean sailing cats spend years on blue water passages, so rigging, chainplates and the bridgedeck structure deserve regular expert checks. Their width means a marina berth needs room, and hauling out takes a travel lift wide enough for both hulls. The shallow draught of a catamaran opens up lagoons and anchorages that monohulls have to skip.
