DNA Performance Sailing; cover, cost and conditions

DNA Performance Sailing is based in Lelystad in the Netherlands, on the shore of the IJsselmeer. The yard was set up in 2009 as an independent part of Holland Composites, a firm that has made lightweight carbon parts since 1991. A small team designs and builds fast multihulls there, most of them on foils that lift the hulls clear of the water once the boat gets going. The range includes the F1, an 18-foot A-Class catamaran, the TF10 trimaran at 36 feet and the G4 and F4 catamarans at 40 and 46 feet. DNA boats are recognisable by their slim carbon hulls, curved foils and rigs that owe more to racing than to cruising.

Our model records hold one DNA Performance Sailing design, the DNA 51 sailing catamaran, built from 2015 to 2022. It measures 5.49 metres, exactly 18 feet, which is the length that applies to an A-Class catamaran. None of the brand's lines in our records reaches the most recent build years, and the larger TF10, G4 and F4 are not listed yet. So the figures here describe a single small, very light singlehander that is carried down the beach or trailed to the racing area.

A carbon A-Class cat needs gentle handling ashore. Hulls and foils are light and stiff, but a knock on a concrete slip or a trolley that slips can crack the laminate, so padded cradles and padded bags for the foils are worth having. After each session the foil cases, rudder fittings and trampoline lashings deserve a quick look. When buying a used boat, check the foils for delamination at the tips, the beams for cracks at the hull joints and the mast for wear where it sits in the step. Racing history matters too: a boat that has done many regattas will have worked its rig hard.

What this means for the cover

For the DNA 51 by DNA Performance Sailing series the market value and the replacement cost often

differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the DNA 51 by DNA Performance Sailing series:

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
