Ducky; cover, cost and conditions
Ducky is a family of small sailing catamarans that, according to available sources, comes from Ukraine. What sets them apart is the build: the hulls are inflatable and the whole boat folds down, so a Ducky can be packed away after a day on the water instead of needing a trailer or a spot in a beach compound. The number in each name roughly matches the length in feet, which makes the Ducky 13 a boat of just under four metres and the Ducky 19 one of almost six.
Our model records list six Ducky catamarans: the 13, 14 S, 15, 16, 17 and 19. Four of them, the 13, 15, 17 and 19, appear from build year 2005, while the in-between sizes 14 S and 16 joined in 2016. All six are recorded up to the latest build years. Lengths start at 3.9 metres for the Ducky 13 and end at 5.84 metres for the Ducky 19, with the 14 S at 4.4, the 15 at 4.5, the 16 at 4.8 and the 17 at 5.1 metres. The biggest step in the range is the 70 centimetres between the 17 and the 19.
Inflatable hulls reward a little routine. Rinse salt and sand off before packing, let the tubes dry fully and store them out of strong sun so fabric and seams last. Because a Ducky lives on the beach rather than in a marina, launching through small surf and pulling the boat up afterwards is part of every outing, and a quick look at valves and pressure before rigging saves trouble later in the day.
