EAGLE Catamarane; cover, cost and conditions
EAGLE Catamarane comes from Muhr am See in Middle Franconia, right on the Altmühlsee lake in Bavaria. The yard builds sport catamarans for inland waters and coastal racing, and its central boat is the Eagle 20, a catamaran of just over six metres offered in several specifications. For the Eagle 20 Carbon the yard relies consistently on carbon fibre to save weight and add stiffness. In 2015 it showed the Eagle 20 HF, a foiling version tested by a racing crew. For longer coastal races it developed the Eagle 24 Ocean. Slim hulls, a big mainsail and crews out on the trapeze, as on any sport catamaran, are what you see when an Eagle goes past.
Our model records list six designs, all classed as sport catamarans. Four belong to the Eagle 20 family at 6.1 metres: the original from 2001, the Eagle 20 Ocean from 2007, the Eagle 20 XXL from 2009 and the Eagle 20 C MK II from 2011. The Eagle 24 Ocean is the largest at 7.5 metres and is listed from 2014 to 2019, while the Nikita 18 at 5.5 metres is the smallest, built from 2004 to 2010. The entries end between 2010 and 2019, so none reaches the most recent build years. Five of the six designs lie between six and seven and a half metres.
A sport catamaran leads a hard life on beaches, slipways and trailers. When buying one second hand, check the joints between hulls and crossbeams, the trampoline and its lacing, and the rudder fittings, which take a beating when landing on a beach. On carbon versions, tap the hulls and beams for soft spots that may point to delamination. The mast base and the trapeze wires deserve a close look, as do the sails, which lose shape after a few seasons of racing. Rinse the boat with fresh water after salt water sailing and keep it out of strong sun when ashore.
