Enata is based in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and belongs to the Enata group founded by Sylvain Vieujot, which also works in aerospace and architecture. In 2016 Enata took over the Swiss company Hydros, which had been developing a hydrofoil powerboat since 2010, and that project became the Foiler. Earlier, Vieujot and the Emirati businessman Abdulla Al Hamli had developed the GTCat 66 sailing catamaran, drawn by Nigel Irens and Benoit Cabaret. What ties the boats together is carbon fibre.
Our model records list two designs, both starting in 2017 and both reaching into the most recent build years. The Foiler is classed as a motorboat and measures 9.8 metres. She runs on hybrid diesel electric power, her carbon foils deploy at the push of a button, and from around 12 knots the hull lifts and flies some 1.5 metres above the water. The GTCat 66 is a 20 metre sailing catamaran built entirely in carbon, with four cabins and a weight of about 11.5 tonnes. One boat is more than twice the length of the other, yet both follow the same lightweight thinking.
Carbon structures and moving foils change what an owner has to watch. On the Foiler the foil actuators, seals and sensors deserve a service record, and the hybrid system needs its batteries and electrics checked by someone who knows it. Shallow water calls for the foils to be retracted in good time. On the GTCat 66 a survey should take in both hulls, the beams and the rig, ideally with a specialist in composite laminates who can spot hidden delamination. Both boats are rare, so a used purchase usually starts with the yard's own documentation.
