Extreme Boats; cover, cost and conditions

Extreme Boats builds aluminium boats in Whakatane, in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty. Founder Glenn Shaw brought together an engineering background and a love of fishing and boating, and the first boats came out of a small shed on a rural block near the town. The hulls are built to survey standards and certified to the New Zealand boat building standard. The number in each name tracks the length in centimetres: the 605 is 6.07 metres long, the 1185 measures 11.85.

Our model records hold eleven Extreme designs: ten Game King models and the 645 Centre Console. All are listed for build years 2019 to 2024, with the 645 Centre Console and 745 Game King starting in 2020. Lengths run from the 6.07 metre 605 Game King to the 11.85 metre 1185 Game King. Four models stay under seven metres (605, 616, 645, 646), three sit between seven and eight (695, 745, 795) and three between 8.85 and 9.85 (885, 915, 985), leaving the 1185 on its own at the top.

Aluminium shrugs off knocks that would mark a glassfibre hull, but it does ask for care around dissimilar metals: check the anodes, keep stainless fittings isolated and rinse the boat after every salt water trip. The smaller Game Kings are trailered to the ramp, while the larger ones from about nine metres usually stay on a berth. Fishing electronics and rod holders deserve a look before every season offshore.
