Fabbro Marine Group; cover, cost and conditions
Fabbro Marine Group is the company behind Cape Horn boats, built in Milton in Santa Rosa County on the Florida Panhandle. It began in the garage of Chris Fabbro and his father Bob, who wanted a tough offshore fishing boat that was affordable and easy to look after. In 2017 the yard moved to a larger plant in the county's industrial park. The boats are centre consoles for bay and offshore fishing. The build is the signature: closed cell foam is pressure filled into the hull voids, which makes the hull quiet and stiff and is meant to keep the boat afloat even when swamped. The number in the name is close to the length in feet.
Our model records list 15 boats, all motorboats: 14 Cape Horn and one Cape Bay. Build years begin in 2007, and ten lines run to the latest model years. There are five XS models, three Classic, three Offshore and three tournament models (31 Tournament, 32 T and 36 T), plus the Cape Bay 23. Lengths run from the 5.46 metre Cape Horn 17 Classic to the 11.06 metre Cape Horn 36 Offshore.
Cape Horns are working fishing boats. The smaller ones up to about eight metres are towed to the ramp, the bigger models often sit in a dry stack or a slip. Salt water is hard on outboards, pumps and fittings, so a fresh water flush and a quick check of livewells and bilge pumps after every trip keep them ready for the next early start.
