FinCraft is a line of fibreglass fishing boats from Minnesota. The boat group Genmar unveiled it at the Minneapolis Boat Show in January 2009 as an entry-level package aimed at buyers who would otherwise choose an aluminium boat. The letters VEC stand for Virtual Engineered Composites, a closed-mould process in which resin and catalyst are injected into a sealed mould instead of being laid up by hand. The first boats came out of the VEC plant in Little Falls. After Genmar went bankrupt, its former chief executive Irwin L. Jacobs acquired the FinCraft name together with the VEC technology, and the new FinCraft Boat Co. built the range in Hopkins, Minnesota.

Our model records list four designs, all of them motorboats and all with build years from 2007 to 2015. They match the four layouts named in the trade press when the brand was relaunched: the 17 SC with a side console, the 17 DC with a dual console and a walk-through to the bow, the larger 1850 DC and the 19 CC with a centre console. Both 17-foot boats measure 5.16 metres, while the 1850 DC and the 19 CC reach 5.64 metres. None of the lines runs into the most recent build years, so a FinCraft today is a second-hand find, often still sold with its original trailer and outboard.

These are simple boats to live with. A closed-mould hull has a smooth finish on both faces, and buyers should look at the transom, where the outboard bracket and the trim tabs, if fitted, put load into the laminate. Check that drain plugs, scuppers and the bilge pump work, since open fishing boats take water over the side in a chop. Most FinCraft owners trail their boats, so wheel bearings, lights and winch strap deserve the same attention as the hull. Electronics such as a fishfinder or a bow-mounted trolling motor add up quickly and are worth listing when a boat changes hands.
