Fineline Industries is the company behind Centurion boats, based in Merced in California's Central Valley, where the boats are also built. Rick Lee founded it in 1976 and still runs it. The yard builds towboats for watersports, boats designed to throw a particular wake for skiing, wakeboarding and wakesurfing. The engine sits amidships or far aft on a V drive, and ballast tanks add weight when a bigger wave is wanted. The newer Centurions are easy to place by the short codes Vi, Fi and Ri, the tall tower over the cockpit and the wide swim platform at the stern.
Our model records list 37 Fineline designs, all of them motorboats. Build years run from 2005 into current production, and nine lines reach the latest build years: the Fi21, Fi23 and Fi25, the Ri237, Ri245 and Ri257, and the Vi22 and Vi24. Before them came the Enzo models with the codes FS, SS, SV, SD and FX, the Air Warrior, Storm and Family models with the C4 suffix, plus the Avalanche, Escalade, Concourse and Carbon Pro. Lengths sit close together: 34 designs measure between six and eight metres, only the Enzo SD 220 and SV 220 stay below at 5.2 metres, and the longest Ri245 reaches 8.1 metres.
A Centurion spends its life between the lake and the trailer, so ramp days are part of ownership. The inboard engine and the ballast pumps want regular attention, and on a boat that surfs with full tanks the bilge and hoses deserve a look after every season. Towers and speaker arrays carry real weight and load their mounting points, which is worth checking before each summer. Fresh water lakes are kind to the hull, but freezing nights in autumn call for draining the engine and the tanks.
