Fortuna built sailing catamarans in Cape Town, South Africa, and sold them under the Island Spirit name. Phil Southwell drew the lines. Below the waterline the hulls are solid glassfibre laminate, while the decks have a balsa core. Each hull is divided into several compartments, with sealed crash zones at bow and stern. The boats were delivered to owners around the world on their own bottoms, many of them sailing across the Atlantic to North America. An Island Spirit is recognised by its broad hulls, a compact deckhouse with all-round views from the saloon and a moderate rig meant for cruising.
Our model records list one design, the Island Spirit 36 as a sailing catamaran of 11.1 metres. Build years run from 1995 to 2002. Nothing reaches the most recent build years, and the youngest boats are now more than twenty years old. The 36 developed the Island Spirit 35 on the same basic hull, and the 37 followed later. According to brokers the catamaran has a beam of just over 6.8 metres, draws only about 1.2 metres and offers roughly 1.88 metres of headroom. That suits families and long-distance cruisers who want to tuck into shallow anchorages.
Older cruising catamarans need attention in a few specific places. Check the bridgedeck and the joint between hulls and deckhouse for cracks, which can show where the structure has worked in a seaway. Balsa-cored decks should be sounded for wet patches around stanchions, hatches and winches. Look at the crash zones at bow and stern to make sure they are dry and undamaged. Twin engines mean twice the service history to ask for, including saildrive seals. Many Island Spirits have crossed oceans, so a record of past refits, rigging renewals and haul-outs is a strong point in any purchase.
