Fusion Catamarans is an Australian business. The Fusion 40 was drawn by Garry Lidgard, a New Zealand born designer working from Brisbane, after long discussions with multihull owners in many countries. The company, based at Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays, sells the boat as a modular kit: resin infused glassfibre components that come out of the mould already gelcoated, ready for the owner to assemble at home or to hand to a yard. The parts travel to the building site in two 40 foot containers. As a result, Fusion 40s have been finished in very different places; one was built at The Cat Factory in 2009, another was assembled in La Rochelle in France. The design is meant as a brisk cruising catamaran.
Our model records list the Fusion 40 twice, once as a sailing catamaran and once as a power catamaran, both 12.2 metres long and both starting in 2004. The sailing version is entered up to 2022, while the power version reaches into the most recent build years. So the brand has two entries but a single hull shape. The length refers to the standard kit, because some builders went further: one boat on the market now measures 13.1 metres after being lengthened. With a kit boat, the type name says less about the individual vessel than it would for a production yacht.
Buying a used Fusion 40 means judging the builder as much as the design. Ask for the build log, photographs taken during assembly and the details of who laminated the joints between the kit panels, especially around the bridgedeck and the bulkheads. A professionally finished boat and an owner built one can differ a great deal in fit out, wiring and plumbing. Check the rudders, saildrives or shafts and the crossbeam fittings, and have a surveyor with multihull experience look at the hull to deck joins. Many of these cats are fitted out for long passages, so solar, water and battery systems deserve a close look.
