Glacier Bay; cover, cost and conditions
Glacier Bay builds power catamarans and traces back to Larry Graf, who founded the company in 1989 in the Pacific Northwest. His prototype went into production in 1990 as the Glacier Bay 248, and the brand made its name with rugged, ocean-going twin hulls. The boats are easy to recognise by the two slim hulls with a tunnel between them and by the four-digit model codes, whose suffix tells you the layout: DC for dual console, CC for center console, Cuddy for a small cabin forward, with hardtop versions on some Cuddies.
Our records list 14 Glacier Bay models, all power catamarans and all with build years from 2007 to 2017. Eight are Cuddy versions, three DC and three CC. Two Cuddies have a hardtop (3080 and 3480) and two more are listed as EH and Bulkhead (2680 and 2690). The first two digits sort the sizes: the 2240, 2265 and 2270 measure 7.52 metres, the 2740 DC 8.11 metres, the five 26 models 8.58 metres, the three 30 models 9.78 metres, and the 3470 Cuddy and 3480 Cuddy Hardtop 11.46 metres.
Twin hulls give a flat, steady platform at anchor and a wide deck for fishing, but they also ask for a wider berth and a wider trailer. Whether a model can travel by road depends on its beam and local rules, so owners of the 30 and 34 models usually keep them in the water. Two outboards mean two of everything: flush both engines after salt water and service them on the same schedule so they wear evenly.
