Goodall Design is the design office of Greg and Brett Goodall, who do not just draw their boats but race them every week. The BVBA in the company name points to a Belgian company form. The range is all about racing beach catamarans: the Viper, the Viper Solo, the Foiling Viper Convertible, the C2 and, as the new flagship of the family, the Akurra, which replaces the C2. For around thirty years the most successful Goodall designs have carried the names of snakes. Akurra is a giant water snake from Indigenous Australian mythology whose movements are said to have shaped the land. The Akurra is recognisable by its high volume, wave piercing bows and by tall, narrow rudders that kick up for the beach.
Our model records list one design, the Akurra F18, entered as a sailing catamaran of 5.5 metres. It appears from 2019 and reaches into the most recent build years. F18 stands for Formula 18, a class rule for racing catamarans that fixes length, weight and sail area. According to the builder the Akurra has a beam of 2.6 metres and weighs 180 kilograms, with an aluminium mast of 9.1 metres. The mainsail measures 17 square metres, the jib 4 and the gennaker 21. The hulls are glass epoxy, the daggerboards and rudders carbon epoxy, and the rake of the boards can be adjusted. The Akurra sailed its first world championship in 2021.
A Formula 18 lives on the beach and on the road, and both leave marks. Rinse the boat with fresh water after sailing in salt, check the trampoline lacing and the rudder stocks, and look at the daggerboard trunks for chips where the boards meet the hull. Carbon foils should be inspected for cracks along the edges. On a used boat, ask about the age of the sails and the mast, the number of seasons raced and the condition of the launching trolley. A well kept F18 holds together for many seasons of hard sailing.
