Grainger Designs; cover, cost and conditions
Grainger Designs is not a boatyard but the design office of multihull designer Tony Grainger, now working from Thailand. It draws sailing catamarans, trimarans and power cats and sells plans, including plans for kit construction. So the boats come from various yards and from owners themselves, and two hulls of one design can differ a good deal. Designs go by names such as Mystery Cove, Spoon Bay, Alfresco, Raider or TR. Three digit numbers usually mean feet times ten, four digit numbers centimetres, so an Alfresco 1060 is 10.6 metres. Tri marks a trimaran version.
Our model records list 28 designs: 27 sailing catamarans, five of them Tri versions, plus the Oasis 380 listed as a motor yacht. Build years run from 1987 to 2027, but only the TR 42 is still current; most designs are recorded up to 2005. Lengths range from 8 to 20 metres, with half of them between 10 and 12.8 metres. The Grainger 075 Mk-2 and Tri 075/2 start at 8 metres, and the Spoon Bay at 10.6 metres is the earliest entry. The Mystery line runs from 10.2 to 12.8 metres, as does the TR line from 10 metres. Above sit the Grainger 1600 at 16 metres and the Charter 2000 at 20.
Many of these catamarans were built for coastal cruising and ocean passages. Because builders vary, value depends heavily on who built the boat and how: the laminate and bridgedeck, rig and sails, engines and the paperwork documenting the build. A well recorded yard build usually carries more weight than the design name alone.

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,
and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
For the Oasis 380 by Grainger Designs series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
