Gunboat Pty Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
Gunboat was the idea of the American Peter Johnstone, son of J/Boats co-founder Bob Johnstone. In the late nineties he set out to build a sailing catamaran that would be fast and comfortable at the same time. The first designs came from Morrelli & Melvin and the boats were built in Cape Town, where Tribe, the first Gunboat 62, was launched in 2001. From 2008 Nigel Irens drew designs as well, among them the Gunboat 55. Production moved from South Africa to China and the United States and finally to France, where Grand Large Yachting took over the brand and opened a new hall in La Grande-Motte in 2018, working with VPLP Design. Hulls are infused carbon with epoxy and a honeycomb core.
Our model records list five designs, every one of them a sailing catamaran. First comes the Gunboat 48 at 14.74 metres, listed from 2003 to 2016. From 2010 the Gunboat 55 at 17.35 metres follows, recorded until 2018, together with the G4 at 12.14 metres, the smallest boat of the brand, listed until 2020. The Gunboat 68 at 20.75 metres has been in the records since 2015, the Gunboat 88 at 23.95 metres since 2018. These two reach into the most recent build years, while the other three have ended. The range therefore runs from just over twelve to almost 24 metres, with four of the five designs longer than 14 metres.
Carbon and honeycomb are light and stiff, but damage can hide beneath an intact surface. On a used Gunboat a thorough survey with tap testing or thermography of the hulls, bridgedeck and beams is worth every hour, as is a close look at daggerboard cases and rudder bearings. The rig carries high loads, so ask when standing rigging and halyards were last replaced and check the sail inventory. Many of these boats have crossed oceans, which shows in logbooks, engine hours and watermakers. A full history from the yard or previous owners makes the boat easier to judge and to sell on later.
