HH Catamarans; cover, cost and conditions

HH Catamarans builds its boats in Xiamen, a port city on the south-east coast of China. The brand belongs to Hudson Wang and his company Hudson Yacht & Marine. Since 2012 the hulls have been drawn by the American office of Morrelli & Melvin, a team with a long record in racing multihulls and fast cruising cats. Construction was led by the New Zealand boatbuilder Paul Hakes, a specialist in pre-preg carbon. The cats are easy to recognise by their C-shaped daggerboards and T-foil rudders, their low, stretched deckhouses and the choice between a central helm with a forward cockpit or twin helms aft. Depending on specification, the hulls are built in full carbon or in epoxy with E-glass.

Our model records list two designs, both sailing catamarans: the HH 50 Ocean Cruising at 15.79 metres and the HH 55 at 16.74 metres. The HH 50 Ocean Cruising appears from build year 2018, the HH 55 from 2023. Both lines reach into the most recent build years, and no earlier boats from the yard's first seasons are listed. The range is narrow but large throughout: nothing stays under 15 metres, and the two lines are less than a metre apart. Anyone looking for a used HH will therefore find young boats, all of them bluewater catamarans meant for long passages.

Fast cats with carbon structures reward careful owners. Daggerboard cases and the boards themselves deserve a close look after every season, since a grounding with the board down loads the case and the surrounding laminate. On a used boat, a survey of the carbon structure, the rudder bearings and the standing rigging tells more than any logbook. Many HH owners sail long ocean passages, so the state of the sails, the batteries and the watermaker matters as much as the hulls. Check which helm layout the boat has, because the central and the aft-helm versions sail and live quite differently.

What this means for the cover

As the HH 50 Ocean Cruising and HH 55 by HH Catamarans series are still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the HH 50 Ocean Cruising, HH 55 by HH Catamarans series:

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
