Humber Inflatable Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Humber builds rigid inflatables in England. The works are at Hull in Yorkshire, where Frank Roffee built the first boat in 1964; the house is still in family hands and run by the third generation. Its own wharfage in the Port of Hull is used for testing. You recognise the boats by the deep vee carried well forward, the substantial tube with its separate chambers and the plain functional console; the finish is drawn for hard use rather than for effect.
Our model records list 62 Humber models, 58 of them rigid inflatables and four soft inflatables. Build years start in 1987 and run into current production. Sixty series are recorded: the Assault range from 4.0 to 5.5, the Destroyer range from 5.0 to 6.5, the inflatables 3.46, 4.0 and 5.0, and older models such as the Attack 5.3. Lengths run from 3.1 to 11 metres, half the models between 5 and 7 metres. Unlike many other builders, the number in the name gives the length in metres directly, so an Assault 4.7 measures around 4.7 metres.
On a rigid inflatable of this size three things matter and none of them appears in the model name: the engine, which on a five to seven metre boat usually carries more value than the hull; the state of the tube, which ages through sunlight and abrasion quite independently of the hull beneath it; and how the boat is actually used, since a private boat and a working one lead different lives.

As the Humber 3.46, Humber 4.0,
Humber 5.0 by Humber Inflatable Boats and 1 more series are still in production,
parts are available and repairs are predictable.
Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.
As the Humber Assault 4.0, Humber Assault 4.3,
Humber Assault 4.5 by Humber Inflatable Boats and 39 more series are still in production,
parts are available and repair costs are predictable.
Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
For the Humber Ocean Pro 4.8, Humber Assault 5.7,
Humber Assault 5.9 by Humber Inflatable Boats and 11 more series the market value and the
replacement cost often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Humber 3.46, Humber 4.0, Humber 5.0 by Humber Inflatable Boats and further series:
Even without an engine the rule holds: a tear from impact or vandalism is covered,
UV ageing is wear.
For the Humber Assault 4.0, Humber Assault 4.3,
Humber Assault 4.5 by Humber Inflatable Boats and further series:
On an inflatable the cause decides, not the damage: a tear from impact is covered,
porous fabric after years in the sun is not.
The outboard belongs in the policy with its serial number.
