Worth knowing
IW-Varvet; cover, cost and conditions
IW-Varvet was a yard on Orust, the island on Sweden's west coast known for its boatbuilding. It made its name above all with the IW 31, a sailing yacht designed by Sparkman & Stephens, conceived in the late 1960s and built until the mid 1980s. In the early years of the IOR rule it counted as a large Half-Tonner, with slender lines, a narrow beam and a rather snug interior. The larger IW 40 followed later. Alongside the sailing yachts, IW-Varvet also built motorboats of around 7.5 metres. To spot an IW sailing yacht, look for the long, narrow hull, drawn more for speed than for living space.
Our model records hold ten designs from build years 1965 to 1997, and none reaches the recent build years. Four are sailing yachts: the IW 31 and IW 31 She at 9.45 metres each, the Lill-Scampi at 7.8 metres and the IW 40, which at 12.1 metres is the yard's largest boat and, listed until 1997, also the longest running. Four more are motorboats, the IW 25, S 25, Toron and Toron 25, all 7.5 metres long, and two are classed as motor yachts, the IW 25 Family and IW 25 Fishing. The oldest entries, the S 25 and IW 31 She, start in 1965. Eight of the ten designs measure under eight metres.
Every IW is now a used boat with decades behind it. On the sailing yachts, start with the rig: original standing rigging from the seventies or eighties is long past its service life, and chainplates and mast step deserve a close look. The narrow IOR hull of the IW 31 sails fast but heels early, so check the keel bolts and the hull around the keel for signs of hard groundings in rocky water. Old deck fittings can let water into the core around them. On the motorboats, the engine and its history matter most, and replacement parts for older units may take some searching. A survey before purchase is well worth the cost.

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the IW 40, IW 31, IW 31 She by IW-Varvet and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the IW 25, Toron 25, S 25 by IW-Varvet and further series:
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.
Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For the IW 25 Family, IW 25 Fishing by IW-Varvet series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
