Worth knowing
James & Caddy; cover, cost and conditions
James & Caddy was a boatbuilder in Weymouth on the Dorset coast, and its name is closely tied to the Nelson motor boats. The yard fitted out the glassfibre Nelson 32, 34 and 45 hulls moulded by Tyler Boats and Halmatic. John Askham drew the Weymouth 32 for James & Caddy; before that, working for TT Boat Designs, he had designed the original Nelson 34 and the Nelson 40. Halmatic later bought the yard and kept the Weymouth name for a whole range of semi displacement boats. A Weymouth, in other words, carries the name of the harbour where it was finished.
Our model records list two designs, both motor yachts. The Weymouth 42 measures 12.62 metres and the Weymouth 48 reaches 14.82 metres. Both are recorded for the build years 1972 to 1979, and neither line continues into later years. The whole range therefore belongs to the seventies, and today these yachts are found only on the second hand market. After some fifty years most of them have been through engine changes, rewiring and new interiors, so two boats of the same model can differ a great deal.
With a yacht of this age the survey matters more than the brochure. Engine beds, shaft seals, fuel tanks and wiring deserve a close look, as do any later alterations to the superstructure. Paperwork from refits tells a buyer which parts are original and which are recent. Boats of twelve to fifteen metres are often used for longer coastal passages, so ground tackle, bilge pumps and navigation lights should be checked as carefully as the engines. A well documented history is worth more than a fresh coat of paint.
