James Wharram; cover, cost and conditions
James Wharram is a designer's name rather than a yard: James Wharram Designs sells plans for sailing catamarans inspired by the double canoes of Polynesia. Most boats are built by their owners in plywood with epoxy and glass cloth, which shapes their look: two slim, pointed hulls joined by crossbeams and slatted decks, often with a low deck pod. Many names come from Polynesia, such as Tiki, Pahi, Hitia, Tangaroa and Tehini. The Tiki family dates from the early 1980s, the Tiki 21 being drawn in 1981.
Our records list 35 Wharram designs, 30 cruising catamarans with accommodation and five open beach catamarans. Build years run from 1971 to 2013, lengths from 4.3 metres for the open Hitia to 19.2 metres for the Pahi 63, Gaia and Quetzalcoate. Half the designs measure between eight and 12.5 metres. The Tiki range runs from the 6.4 metre Tiki 21 through the Tiki 26, 30, 31, 36 and 38 to the 14 metre Tiki 46, alongside older designs such as Hinemoa, Tane, Oro and Tangaroa from the 1970s.
Because almost every Wharram is a one off, there is no market price to read its value from, and the builder's records matter. Plywood hulls need steady care, and many of these boats are built with long ocean passages in mind.

For the Tanenui, Tiki 30, Tiki 38 by James Wharram and 20 more series the market value and the
replacement cost often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Tiki 36, Tiki Coastal, Narai by James Wharram and 8 more series there is no list price
left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Tanenui, Tiki 30, Tiki 38 by James Wharram and further series:
On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,
and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
For the Hitia 17, Hitia 14, Maui by James Wharram and further series:
Open catamarans are beached and trailed, so most damage happens ashore and in transit,
not on the water.
