JBT Marine; cover, cost and conditions
JBT Marine is the company of Jonny Boys, who according to the boating press acquired the rights to build Ballistic RIBs in 2002 and sells them in Britain. Before the boats went on sale, he entered a team in the Trans Agulhas, an endurance race of some 600 miles around the southern tip of Africa. What the crews learnt there went into the hull that followed: a deep vee with long, unbroken spray rails and pronounced reverse chines, meant to keep the boat dry and steady. The Ballistic is aimed at leisure users, many of them families looking for a capable sports boat. A sharp entry and those bold rails along the bottom make it easy to recognise on a slipway.
Our model records hold six designs, all rigid inflatables and all from the Ballistic range. The earliest entries, the Ballistic 6.5 and the Ballistic 7.8 Passenger, start in 2002, with the Ballistic 5.5 and Ballistic 7.8 following from 2003. Two smaller designs joined in 2016, the Ballistic 4.2 M at 4.2 metres and the Ballistic 6.0 M at six metres. Five of the six reach into the most recent build years; only the 7.8 Passenger stops in 2022. Lengths run from 4.2 to 7.8 metres, with two designs at 7.8 metres, one at 6.5 and one at 5.5 metres.
A RIB asks for care in places a solid hull does not. The tubes should be checked for chafe, sun damage and slow leaks, and the glued seams where tube meets hull deserve a look every season. Valves, rubbing strakes and lifting points wear with use. On a used Ballistic, check the transom around the outboard bolts and the condition of the console mounts, since these boats are often run hard in a chop. Most owners keep them on a trailer and launch at the slip, so a well kept road trailer with sound rollers and lights belongs to the package.
