JCL Marine; cover, cost and conditions
JCL Marine was a boatyard at Brundall in Norfolk, part of the group of companies owned by Colin Chapman, the man behind Lotus Cars. Through the seventies it turned out GRP motor cruisers, and from the middle of the decade it worked on a new line with an Italian look, made up of the Mirage, the Mystere and the Mamba. The link with racing car engineering showed most clearly in the Marauder 46, whose hull was moulded in a single piece by vacuum injection, a method developed by the sister company Technocraft. Around 1980 the yard closed, caught by the recession that hit boatbuilding at the time. The boats are recognisable by the Italian styling of the later models and by the names beginning with M that run through the whole range.
Our model records list four motor yachts from the yard. The earliest are the Mystere at 12.9 metres and the Moonraker 36 at 11 metres, both recorded from 1971. The Marauder 46 follows from 1972 and at 14.38 metres is the largest boat on the list, while the Mamba starts in 1976 and is the smallest at 10.7 metres. The entries close between 1984 and 1985: the Mystere and the Mamba in 1984, the Marauder 46 and the Moonraker 36 in 1985. All four sit between just under eleven and just over fourteen metres, which means every JCL afloat today is at least forty years old.
A GRP motor cruiser of this age is only as good as the care it has received. Before buying, have a surveyor check the hull for osmosis and moisture, look closely at the transom and the engine beds, and ask how the deck and windows have been sealed over the years. Many of these boats have been repowered, so the paperwork for the engines, shafts and steering tells you a lot about past owners. The wiring is often a mix of original and later additions and deserves a careful look. JCL cruisers were built for coastal work as well as sheltered water, and today they are found on rivers, estuaries and along the coast, frequently in the hands of owners who enjoy restoring a classic.
