Josef Reich GmbH builds workboats in aluminium. The founder, Josef Reich, ran the business for 31 years before handing the management to Randy Buhmann. With the change comes a move to Lake Constance, where Germany, Austria and Switzerland meet, and into new yard halls there. Customers come from across the German-speaking countries. Aluminium workboats share a family look: welded hulls, sturdy rubbing strakes and an open deck layout that leaves room for gear and cargo rather than decoration.
Our model records hold 15 boats of the AL range, nine motorboats and six motor yachts. The number in each name tracks the length: the AL.490 P measures 4.9 metres, the AL. 1250 reaches 12.5 metres, and the steps in between are 540, 600, 670, 750, 850 and 1000. Every size except the smallest comes as a BK and a P version, which gives seven BK and eight P models. Seven entries start in 1996, among them the AL.600 and AL.670 in both versions, while eight joined in 2001, mostly the larger hulls from 8.5 metres up. The AL.490 P and AL.540 P end in 2003, the rest in 2008, so none reaches the most recent build years. Seven designs stay below seven metres.
The youngest boats of the range date from 2008, so every hull on the market has years of work behind it. Aluminium does not rot or blister, but it reacts to stray currents and to contact with other metals, so anodes, the earthing of shore power and the isolation of stainless fittings deserve a close look on any used boat. Welds around cleats, towing points and the transom are where hard use shows first. Paint that lifts in patches often hides corrosion underneath. The smaller boats up to 6.7 metres are easy to trail, which makes the condition of the trailer part of any purchase. On the larger AL. 850, 1000 and 1250 the engine hours and service history matter as much as the hull.
