K-designs; cover, cost and conditions
K-designs is the design office of Bernd Kohler, born in Apolda in eastern Germany and later settled in the Netherlands. His catamarans are not built in a production yard but from his plans and kits, very often by their owners. The preferred method is plywood, glass cloth and epoxy: light, stiff and within reach of an amateur builder. It began in 1979 with the little Speedy Cat 435, followed by the twin rigged DUO 425, the cruising cat Pelican and the ocean racer Zeeman.
Our model records list 25 K-designs models, 21 sailing catamarans and four small sport catamarans, with model years from 1992 to 2003 and none still in production. Lengths run from 4.3 to 21.3 metres, and half of them sit between 7.9 and 15.5 metres. The Kreuzer range covers nine sizes whose number gives the length in centimetres, from the Kreuzer 800 at 7.9 metres to the Kreuzer 1800 at 18 metres. The DUO 425, SC 435, Speedy Cat and Seahawk measure 4.3 to 5.0 metres, while named designs run from the 6.5 metre Butterfly through Pelican and Manta to Zeeman at 18.3 and the Racer 2130 at 21.3 metres.
Because each boat was built by a different hand, no two are quite alike. What decides the value is the quality of the build and the paperwork behind it: fairing and glassing, the state of the epoxy and plywood, the rig and sails, and whether the builder kept photos and records. The small beach cats are trailed and sailed off the shore.

For the DUO 425, Kreuzer 800, Kreuzer 950 by K-designs and 18 more series the market value and the
replacement cost often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Butterfly, Orca, Seagull 12.0 by K-designs and 1 more series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the DUO 425, SC 435, Seahawk by K-designs and further series:
Open catamarans are beached and trailed, so most damage happens ashore and in transit,
not on the water.
For the Kreuzer 800, Kreuzer 950, Kreuzer 1050 by K-designs and further series:
On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,
and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
