Kanter Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Kanter has been building boats in St. Thomas, Ontario, near Lake Erie, since 1977. The yard works in aluminium and, where needed, steel, much of it built to order: sightseeing, fishing and work boats alongside motor and sailing yachts for long passages, including the long range Passagemaker motor yachts. Two naming systems help place a Kanter. Smaller boats carry their length in metres, such as the Kanter 7m Patrol, while the yachts carry a number in feet, from the Kanter 45 to the Kanter 80, plus the Passagemaker and Bougainvillaea names.

Our model records list 33 models: eleven motor boats, six rigid inflatables, eight motor yachts and eight sailing yachts. Build years run from 2006 into current production, with 30 of the 33 still being built. Lengths go from 6.1 to 24.4 metres, half between eight and 17.2 metres. The metric boats run from 6.05 to 10.5 metres in open, cabin and patrol versions. The motor yachts start with the Kanter 45 at 13.7 metres, and the Passagemaker 54, 62 and 74 measure 17 to 22.6 metres. The sailing yachts range from the Kanter 47 at 14.4 metres to the Kanter 80 at 24.4 metres.

Many Kanters are one offs or close to it. The yachts are built for ocean passages and long seasons away, the metric boats for lakes, rivers and sheltered coasts. Value follows the build: hull material and specification, engines and hours, tankage and systems, and on the sailing yachts the rig.
