KeelCraft is a young company from Prague, founded by the Czech entrepreneur David Miklas. The boat is moored in the Holešovice port on the Vltava, while the building takes place in eastern Slovakia, carried out by a team that spent more than twenty years building similar boats in Italy. The idea is the classic mahogany runabout with a rounded barrel-back stern, only with an electric motor in place of a petrol engine. Miklas has said the motivation was the pollution that combustion engines and leaking fuel leave in the water. The timber is worked mostly by hand, with computer-controlled machining playing only a small part. A KeelCraft shows itself through its varnished mahogany hull and a silent departure from the quay.

Boats are built to order; the 2019 report mentions a build time of around six months and describes the boat at that point as a prototype. Varnished mahogany is beautiful and demanding. Every scratch that breaks the varnish lets water into the wood, so a careful owner touches up the finish each season and keeps the boat under breathable sheeting. When looking at a used one, check the planking for dark patches, the seams around fittings and the transom, and ask how often the varnish has been renewed. On the electric side the battery pack is the heart of the boat: its age, its charging history and the remaining capacity matter more than the hours on the motor. Charging takes several hours, so a berth with shore power is part of owning one, and on lakes with engine restrictions the silent drive opens waters that petrol boats cannot use.
