Kelsall Catamarans; cover, cost and conditions
Behind this name stands not a production builder but a designer: Derek Kelsall, born in north Wales in 1933 and died in 2023. He came from racing, built ocean racing trimarans in the 1960s and from the 1980s turned mainly to fast cruising catamarans. He is also remembered for a building method he called KSS, in which flat sandwich panels are laid up on a table and only afterwards brought to shape, which shortens the build a great deal and puts it within reach of amateur builders. You recognise his boats by the slender very straight hulls, the flat bridgedeck and the plain lines without applied superstructure.
Our model records list 67 designs from this stable: 65 sailing catamarans, one sailing trimaran and one open catamaran. Recorded build years run from 1979 to 2005. Sixty series are recorded: the Kelsall 45 and 60, the Sk range from the Sk 24s through 27s, 31s, 32s, 33 and SK 37 to the SK 40s, the Amkat 34 and the Amkat Power 24 and 26, and single designs such as the Suncat 40 Mk II, Space 57, Advantage 43, Lima 34 MK II and the Celicat 25 and 30. Lengths run from 6.7 to 18.3 metres, half the designs between 9 and 12.2 metres.
A multihull is not a larger monohull. It has two hulls, a load bearing bridgedeck between them and no ballast keel to right it, so the stresses sit in the connections rather than low down in a fin. Many of these boats were also built from plans, sometimes by their owners, which means their papers are the build file rather than a yard serial number.

For the Amkat Power 24, Amkat Power 26,
Kelsall 45 by Kelsall Catamarans and 23 more series the market value and the replacement cost
often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Tango 40, Advantage 43,
Rose 40 by Kelsall Catamarans and 31 more series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Amkat Power 24, Amkat Power 26, Kelsall 45 by Kelsall Catamarans and further series:
On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,
and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
For the Trail 22 by Kelsall Catamarans series: Open catamarans are beached and trailed,
so most damage happens ashore and in transit, not on the water.
For the K - 39 by Kelsall Catamarans series:
On a trimaran the floats and their beams are the weak point,
on folding models the mechanism as well.
