Kinetic Catamarans; cover, cost and conditions
Kinetic Catamarans builds in Knysna on the southern coast of South Africa. The yard is the work of South African boatbuilder Leon Scheepers, formerly factory manager at Harvey Yachts, and American entrepreneur Bob Hayward. Around 2018 the two took over the Harvey Yachts yard and moulds and kept its experienced boatbuilders. Designs are developed together with Simonis Voogd Design, and the first boat, the Kinetic 62, was launched in 2019. Construction is full carbon and epoxy, vacuum infused, and each boat is built semi-custom with room for an owner's wishes. The catamarans are recognisable by slender, light hulls made for fast cruising.
Our model records hold one design for Kinetic Catamarans: the KC 54 sailing catamaran at 16.5 metres. The listed build years run from 2018 to 2023; according to the trade press, tooling started in August 2019 and the first KC 54 was due to launch in spring 2021. No line in our records reaches into the most recent build years. The larger Kinetic 62 is not held as a separate design in our data. At just over 16 metres the KC 54 is a yacht for long distances, built for owners who want pace and comfort on ocean passages.
Carbon laminate is stiff and light, but damage is not always visible from outside, so a survey of a used Kinetic should include a careful tap test or moisture and laminate checks around bulkheads, chainplates and the bridgedeck. Daggerboards or keels, rudders and their bearings take high loads on a fast catamaran and deserve close inspection. Many boats of this kind have crossed oceans, so the rig, sails and the hours on engines and watermakers say a lot about past use. Records of the build, as each hull is semi-custom, are worth asking for.
