Knysna Yacht Company; cover, cost and conditions
The Knysna Yacht Company builds sailing catamarans in Knysna, a coastal town in South Africa, and has been turning out cruising cats there since 2002, first the 440 and 480 and later the 500SE. Angelo Lavranos drew the Knysna 480. The construction is cored throughout: hulls, deck and bulkheads use Airex foam, and the laminate is laid by hand and vacuum bagged with vinylester resin under an isophthalic gelcoat. A Knysna is easy to pick out in an anchorage. The low, forward-sloping coachroof sits amidships and its roofline runs aft as a hard bimini over the cockpit, while raked bows, reverse transoms and chines along both hulls give the boat its lean profile.
Our model records hold two designs from the yard, both sailing catamarans. The Knysna 480 is listed for build years 2008 to 2015 and measures 14.63 metres. The 500SE, short for Special Edition, grew out of it and follows from 2014 to 2024 at 15.24 metres, so for two seasons the two lines overlapped. Neither runs into the most recent build years in our list; the latest entry dates from 2024. Only about sixty centimetres separate the two, and both belong firmly to the class of large bluewater cats. The 500SE was fitted out as a liveaboard and laid out so that a crew of two can handle it.
A cat of this size that has crossed oceans deserves a careful survey before purchase. Foam-cored hulls should be checked for moisture and delamination, especially around through-hull fittings, chainplates and the areas where the bridgedeck meets the hulls. Look at both engines, the saildrives or shafts and the rudder bearings, since every system on a catamaran comes in pairs. The hard bimini and the large saloon windows need sound seals. Many of these boats have been lived on for years, so the condition of the galley, the watermaker, the batteries and the solar installation tells a lot about how the previous owners used them. A complete logbook and maintenance file is worth asking for.
