Kristiansands Mekaniske Verksted, known as KMV, was a yard in Kristiansand on the south coast of Norway, founded in 1855. It built cargo ships, special vessels and fast passenger craft. Many boats drawn by Bror With were produced at KMV-Høllen. With, an engineer and industrial designer, was behind the widely sold With 200 and With 400 and developed the Dromedille hull, a patented form that sits between a planing and a displacement hull. His name also appears on the With Vitur models in our data. KMV went bankrupt in 1990, carried on under a new name and closed after a second bankruptcy in 1996.
Our model records list three designs: two motorboats and one motor yacht. The With Vitur CC starts in 1968 and runs to 1976, the With Vitur follows from 1970 to 1977, and both measure 5.68 metres. Norwegian listings describe the With Vitur as a day cruiser of about 20 feet with an outboard. The larger KB 27 CC is a motor yacht of 8.25 metres, built from 1976 to 1984. None of the three reaches recent build years. Production in our data spans 17 build years, and every boat is now more than forty years old.
Boats from the sixties and seventies have usually passed through several owners, so the first question is what has been renewed and when. On the With Vitur, check the transom where the outboard hangs, since that is where an older glassfibre hull takes the most strain. Deck fittings, windscreens and wiring are often original and may need work. The KB 27 CC deserves a look at its engine installation, fuel lines and steering. Many of these boats have spent their winters ashore in Norway under tarpaulins; a dry, well-ventilated boat with a documented history is worth more than a fresh coat of paint.
