Kværnø Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Kværnø Boats is based at Sandstad on the Norwegian island of Hitra; drive out of the Hitra tunnel and the building is right there at the first junction. The family firm builds sturdy aluminium boats as a range of standard models, meant for leisure use as much as for commercial work. It all began with a fishing camp. Rather than buy boats for the guests, the owners decided to make their own, and that idea grew into a line of fishing and workaday boats built on shared platforms in several versions. Bjørn Ivar Kværnø runs the yard as managing director. The boats are recognisable by their aluminium hulls and a layout shaped by fishing and everyday use, with cabin and hardtop versions.
Our model records hold three Kværnø designs, all listed as motorboats. The oldest is the Kværnø 585 at 5.85 metres, built from 2007 to 2013. The 6.8 metre platform follows in two versions: the Kværnø 680 Cabin from 2017 to 2022 and the Kværnø 680 from 2019 to 2023. None of the three runs into the most recent build years in our data. The yard itself names the 680 HT, with hardtop and bow thruster, as one of its newer boats; that version is not yet a separate line in our records. The sizes sit close together, with less than a metre between the smallest and the largest, roughly 19 to 22 feet, firmly in the range of handy coastal boats.
Aluminium hulls are tough, yet they ask for a little attention. Sacrificial anodes need checking every season, and mixing metals such as stainless fittings or a bronze transducer without proper isolation invites galvanic corrosion. On a used boat, look along the welds and the keel line for dents from rocky landings, and check the transom where the outboard hangs. Fishing boats work hard, so the deck fittings, rod holders and any livewell plumbing deserve a close look. Engine hours and the service history of the outboard often say more about the boat than its build year. A sound trailer with working lights and brakes matters, since many of these boats travel by road between the slipway and the water.
