Worth knowing

Lasai; cover, cost and conditions

Lasai is a Basque word for calm, and the boats are built around that idea. The yard is based near Bilbao and makes open day boats driven purely by electricity, with a large solar panel on the T-top supplying part of the energy. The boats are moored in Getxo, where the River Nervión meets the Bay of Biscay, while a specialist magazine reports that building takes place in southern Spain and Portugal. A Lasai is easy to recognise by the flat solar roof over the helm, the open deck with a generous sunbathing area and a GRP hull with a pronounced step and spray rails. Power comes from an electric outboard, and the concept is tuned for range and quiet cruising rather than top speed. The 20 GL carries CE category C, which points it at coastal waters, rivers and canals.

Our model records list two designs, both motorboats: the Lasai 20 GL and the Lasai 22 GL. Both start with build year 2022 and both run into the most recent build years, so the brand appears only with current production. Each is listed at 6.8 metres. The 20 GL is rated for six people and draws about 30 centimetres, shallow enough for quiet anchorages and riverbanks. Magazine reports also mention a lower-powered version for lakes and rivers and a speed-limited charter version, though our records do not list them separately. The result is a compact, young range built around a single hull length.

Looking after an electric boat is mostly about the energy system. The battery bank wants to be stored at a sensible charge level over the winter, cable connections and the shore power inlet deserve a regular look, and the solar panel delivers more when kept clean of salt and bird droppings. An electric outboard has far fewer moving parts than a petrol engine, but its seals and lower unit still need checking after a season in salt water. On a used Lasai, ask for the battery history and the remaining capacity, check the T-top mounts for cracks and look at the hull step for knocks from beaching. With such a shallow draft, many owners nose into beaches and shallow bays, so the underside tells you a lot about how the boat has been used.
