Aarewerft Lehmann sits on the banks of the Aare in Solothurn, Switzerland, and has been building boats there since 1955. The second and third generations of the family now run the yard side by side. It works in GRP, aluminium and steel, and besides leisure craft it turns out multi-purpose boats for police forces, rescue services, fire brigades, the military and commercial users. That background carries over into the boats it builds for private owners: tough hulls, practical deck layouts and a design meant for daily use. The yard also handles repairs and storage and runs a motorboat driving school. Its boats are easy to place by their family names, Swiss Cat and Swiss Pilotina.

Our model records list 20 motor boats from the yard, 15 in the Swiss Cat range and five Swiss Pilotina. The Pilotina is the older line: the 500, 580 and 680 appear from 1998, the 650 Fish from 2004 and the 680 CS from 2010. The Swiss Cat enters our records in 2011, with the Swiss Cat 31 added in 2018. The smallest boat is the Swiss Cat 15 at 4.6 metres, the largest the Swiss Cat 31 at 9.5 metres, and 16 of the 20 designs are under eight metres long. Apart from the Swiss Cat 22 Rubin and the Swiss Cat 28 Pilot ST, which end with the 2021 build year, every model is still in production.

Boats with this kind of working pedigree tend to age well, but they still deserve a careful look before purchase. On a used Swiss Cat or Pilotina, check the hull and bottom for impact marks from landing stages and shallow shores, the transom where the engine is mounted, and the fittings of the steering console and railings. The engine service history matters more than the hours alone, and on boats that have been used for fishing, look at the fish box, drains and bilge. Typical waters are lakes and rivers such as the Aare itself, and a boat kept in fresh water usually shows less wear on its metal fittings. A boat that comes with the yard's own service record is a good sign.
