M and M; cover, cost and conditions
M and M, usually written M&M, was a yard in Drachten in the Dutch province of Friesland. It made its name with the Nimble catamarans, drawn by the Dutch designer Alexander Verheus through his office Alexander Multihull Design. The Nimble range spanned cruising catamarans from just over 36 to around 50 feet. The yard built in epoxy, which keeps the hulls light and resistant to osmosis, and the forward crossbeam was a composite structure as well. A Nimble is easy to pick out by a cockpit that is generous for the length, a helm with a clear view and an interior spread over several cabins in both hulls. In the long run the small Frisian yard could not hold its own against the large production builders abroad.
Our model records hold one M and M design: the Nimble 36 sailing catamaran, 11.2 metres long and built from 1994 to 2000. Larger sisters from the range are not listed separately, and nothing in our records reaches the most recent build years. The Nimble 36 is very much a boat of the nineties, and even the youngest hulls are now more than a quarter of a century old. Variants such as the Nimble 36.5 and the Nimble 36.9 appear on the used market; one 36.9 built in 1997 has three cabins and one heads.
Age shapes what to look for on a Nimble 36. Epoxy hulls resist osmosis, but the bridgedeck, the forward crossbeam and its attachment points deserve a close survey, since they carry the rig and the loads between the hulls. Check the rudders and their bearings in both hulls, and the state of the trampoline or forward deck. Standing rigging of this age has often been replaced at least once, so ask for dates and receipts. Many catamarans of the period have spent years on long passages, and a look at the engines, the electrics and the fresh water systems tells a lot about how the boat has been kept.
