Maine Cat; cover, cost and conditions
Maine Cat builds catamarans in Bremen, a small town on the midcoast of Maine in the north-east of the United States. The yard is the work of Dick Vermeulen, who owns the business and designs the boats himself. He started in 1991, while the company later gave 1993 as its founding year; in the early days three people built the Maine Cat 22 in his garage. In 1996 Vermeulen tooled up the Bremen shop for a 30-footer. From 2002 he built a 38-foot prototype, which led to the Maine Cat 41, launched late in 2004. One detail of the MC 30 stands out at once: a single daggerboard, fitted in the starboard hull only. With the board raised she draws about two feet and can tuck into coves that monohulls cannot reach.
Our model records list four designs: three sailing catamarans and one power catamaran. The MC 41 appears from 2007, the MC 30 and MC 38 from 2012. According to the source the MC 30 was introduced back in 1996, so our entries begin well after its launch. All three sailing models run into the most recent build years. The MC 30 measures 9.14 metres, the MC 38 11.53 metres and the MC 41 12.68 metres. The only motor boat is the MC P-47 at 14.42 metres, the largest design of the brand, listed for build years 2006 to 2022. The range therefore spans from just over nine to just over fourteen metres, and three of the four lines reach current production.
A cat with a single offset daggerboard rewards a careful look before purchase. Check the board and its case for impact marks, since shallow anchorages are exactly where these boats like to go. Inspect the bridgedeck underside for slamming wear and the hull to deck joints on both sides. On the MC P-47, engine hours and service records for both motors tell more than the cosmetics. Many owners cruise the American east coast seasonally, so ask where and how the boat spent its winters. Rig, sails and electronics deserve the same scrutiny as on any offshore cruiser.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
For the MC P-47 by Maine Cat series the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the MC 30, MC 38, MC 41 by Maine Cat and further series:
On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,
and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
