Mako Marine; cover, cost and conditions

Mako has been building saltwater boats for more than fifty years and describes them as tougher than they need to be. Its focus is the centre console fishing boat, for shallow inshore water as well as the open sea. Today's programme runs from small Pro Skiff models for the flats to offshore consoles such as the 226 CC and 246 CC. Mako belongs to a group of American boat brands that also includes Tracker, Ranger, Nitro and Triton. The designs in our records carry three-digit numbers whose first two digits roughly match the length in feet: the 171 measures just over 17 feet, the 314 Cuddy just over 31. Cuddy refers to a small cabin in the bow, which many fishing boats carry for shelter and stowage.

Our model records list eleven designs: seven motorboats and four larger boats entered as motor yachts. Almost all are listed from 2003, the Mako 284 from 2002, and every one of them ends in 2012. The smallest is the Mako 171 at 5.3 metres, followed by the 192 and 195 at 5.9 metres each, the 201 at 6.2 metres, the 212 and 215 at 6.6 metres and the 232 at 7 metres. The larger group consists of the 252 at 7.6 metres, the 253 W.A. at 7.5 metres, the 284 at 8.7 metres and, largest of all, the 314 Cuddy at 9.5 metres. None reaches the most recent build years, and three stay under six metres.

A Mako from these years is always a used boat today, and most have spent their lives in salt water. Check the transom and the engine brackets for cracks and soft spots, and open the hatches to see the state of the fish boxes, livewell plumbing and bilge pumps. Hinges, rod holders and the console wiring suffer from salt and sun, so corrosion there tells you how the boat was looked after. On cuddy models, look for leaks at the windscreen and the deck hatch, since water in the cabin points to failing seals. Service records for the outboards and a test run at speed show more than any listing. A trailer that has been dunked in salt water for years needs its brakes and bearings checked.

What this means for the cover

For the Mako 171, Mako 192, Mako 195 by Mako Marine and 8 more series the market value and the

replacement cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Mako 171, Mako 192, Mako 195 by Mako Marine and further series:

On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.

Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.

For the Mako 252, Mako 253 W.A., Mako 284 by Mako Marine and further series:

On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.

Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
