Mattia catamarans come from Italy, from Mattia & Cecco, which was already building catamarans in the early 1970s. Its name was made by the Mattia Esse, drawn in 1978 by the engineer Enrico Contreas and recognised by the Italian sailing federation as a one-design class, with a two-piece mast for easy towing. Our records also hold large cruising catamarans. Most models carry a number close to the length in feet, from the Mattia 14 to the 84, while others are named Esse, Superesse, Venti or Declic.
Our model records list 30 Mattia models, 15 sport catamarans and 15 sailing catamarans. Build years run from 1977 to 2005, and none is still in production. Lengths range from 4.3 to 25.4 metres, with half between 5.5 and 12.2 metres. The sport cats run from the Mattia 14 at 4.3 metres via the Esse at 5.5 and the Venti at 6.1 to the Mattia 28 at 8.5 metres. The sailing cats run from the Mattia 7.5 via the Formula 40 at 12.2 metres to the cruising 51, 53, 70 and 84, between 15.5 and 25.4 metres.
The two halves of the range lead different lives. A beach cat is rigged on the sand, raced hard, capsized now and then and kept on its trailer; its value lies in hulls, beams, mast and sails. The big cruisers spend years afloat and cross open water, so laminate, engines, rig and systems decide their worth. With the youngest built in 2005, each hull's history matters.
