Max Cruise Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Max Cruise Marine builds catamarans for sailing long distances. The company was founded by Terry Dewhurst, a long-distance sailor who values high daily runs on passage as much as life at anchor and in harbour. The boats are built in Vietnam, and the yard deals with owners directly throughout specification and construction. Every hull is a semi-custom build: layout, systems and fit-out are agreed with the owner without the cost and delay of a one-off. Construction uses resin infusion with CNC-cut components. On the Max 55 SC this means a vinylester-infused foam sandwich with carbon reinforcement where loads are highest. The Max 44 SC was offered with or without daggerboards and with either diesels or outboards, and it later evolved into the Max 45 SC.
Our model records list four designs, all sailing catamarans, with build years from 2019. The Max 44 SC appears twice, once with daggerboards and once with keels, both at 13.6 metres and listed from 2019 to 2023. Its successor, the Max 45SC at 13.8 metres, is recorded from 2023, as is the Max 55 SC, which at 16.8 metres is the largest design of the yard. These two lines run into the most recent build years. Nothing in the range is shorter than 13.6 metres, so the whole programme sits within a little over three metres of length. These are young, large boats meant for long passages.
Choosing between daggerboards and fixed keels shapes how a Max 44 SC is sailed and kept. Boards help the boat point higher, while keels protect the rudders and make beaching simpler. On a used boat, check the board cases and the keel to hull joints, and look at the rudder bearings. Because every boat was specified individually, ask for the build list and the systems documentation; two boats of the same length can differ widely in batteries, watermakers and electronics. Infused sandwich hulls should be checked for moisture around through-hull fittings.
