McNulty boats come from South Shields at the mouth of the Tyne in north east England. The family worked in the port as ship delivery crews, riggers and stevedores, and boatbuilding ran as a sideline next to heavy marine engineering. McNulty became known for clinker boats whose shape goes back to the foy boats that served big ships on the Tyne. Clinker planks overlap like roof tiles, so you can spot one by the fine steps along the topsides. The names are local: Longstone is a lighthouse rock off the Northumberland coast and Kielder a reservoir inland. The number is the length in feet.
