Mercan Yachting; cover, cost and conditions
Mercan Yachting is a Turkish yard with its own factory in Izmir on the Aegean. It started in 1988 in a small workshop and builds fibreglass boats mainly for working with guests on the water: water sports and parasailing boats, excursion and passenger boats, diving and fishing boats, plus custom builds. The model names usually state the purpose: Ski, Parasailing, Diving, Excursion, Sea Taxi or Fisher. On most models the number roughly gives the length in feet, so a Parasailing 28 is 8.65 metres long.
Our model records list 34 Mercan models, 26 motorboats and eight motor yachts. Build years start in 2005 and 22 models are still in production. Lengths run from 3.9 metres for the Mercan 13 to 13.9 metres for the Stark 45, with half between six and 10.7 metres. At the small end sit the Mercan 13 to 18 and the Ski 16 to Ski 21 of five to 6.5 metres. The Parasailing line runs from the 7.4 metre Parasailing 24 to the 10.9 metre Parasailing 36. Leisure boats with a cabin include the Goby 230 and 280, the Bonito 32 WA and the Butterfly 24, and at the top sit the Trip 44, Stark 45 and Stark 45-C.
In private hands a Mercan is usually a ski boat, a fishing boat or a Goby with a cabin, often kept in a Mediterranean harbour. Boats that tow skiers and tubes carry people in the water behind them, which is worth keeping in mind for liability.
